Corals create spectacular undersea ecosystems, home to thousands of plant and animal species. These "rainforests of the sea" are threatened by illegal and unsustainable fishing, global warming, and pollution.
Less than 1.7% of the world's oceans is protected - far below the 10% target set by the Convention on Biological Diversity. The best way to save corals from disappearing is by creating Marine Protected Areas, and phasing out bottom trawling. By taking these two steps, the United Nations can safeguard coral ecosystems and their diverse marine life.
What can you do to help corals?
- Tell the UN to protect the world's corals. Sign our petition
- Tell elected officials and other influential people to create new Marine Protected Areas to protect coral reefs.
- Never eat reef fish, or deep sea fish caught by bottom trawling, the world's most destructive fishing method.
- Never buy products from coral reefs, including coral jewelry.
- Give or get Chantecaille's Coral Reefs Palette this Spring. Sales raise awareness for greater coral conservation, while generating funds for Marine Conservation Institute!
